What is the Nissan CVT Transmission?

At our Nissan service center, some customers ask us, “What is a CVT transmission and how is it different from an automatic?” Our team is here to shed some light on this modern transmission system and why it’s such a great option for many drivers in Woodway and Hewitt. Learn all about Nissan CVT systems with Douglass Nissan of Waco, and schedule your next Nissan service in Waco today.

Nissan CVT vs. Automatic vs. Manual Transmission

A manual transmission requires the driver to shift each gear by hand, while an automatic transmission completes the process for you. So, what does a CVT do? CVT stands for “continuously variable transmission,” but it goes by many other names at our Nissan repair center: shiftless transmission, step-less transmission, or pulley transmission.

So, how is it different from an automatic transmission? While the automatic transmission uses fixed-gear ratios, the Nissan CVT uses infinitely variable ratios. So a 6-speed automatic transmission is limited to six gears, but a CVT has an infinite number of adjustments available. This makes it more precise and fuel-efficient for your McGregor drives, not to mention, easier to service at the Nissan repair center.

How Does a CVT Work?

If you look at a CVT at our Nissan service center, you’ll see two cone-shaped pulleys connected by an intervening belt or chain. One side of the pulley is fixed, so it stays in place throughout the drive. The other side moves as a result of a hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder tightens or loosens the belt, depending on your speed, which eliminates the need for shift knobs and shift paddles.

What are the Benefits of a CVT?

The major benefit of the CVT is efficiency. A CVT picks the best power range automatically, which means you get the best possible fuel economy without any effort on your part. Additionally, a CVT is a simple design with fewer moving parts. No gears, no paddles. When you drop by for your Nissan oil change and transmission check, you might be surprised by how affordable maintenance can be.
